William Marshall, who was factor to the Duke of Gordon, was known in his own day as a Scottish fiddler and composer of strathspeys, and an inventor. The collection contains almost nothing of musical interest, and the largest single part consists of letters and copies of letters of his sons whilst on active service in India and in the Peninsular War, written to him and to other members of the family.

With some Scottish legal papers, 19th century, including account of the death of a child chimney sweep in Edinburgh in 1817.

Concerning chiefly Holt`s work as a railway engineer in Iraq, 1916-1932 and undated, and as a soil consultant in Sudan, 1952-1958.

papers and notebooks, 1884-1929 and undated, of his father-in-law, the Reverend E M Macphail

papers, 1880-1907 and undated, concerning the claim by Stewart Soutar Johnstone to the Marquesate of Annandale.

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

Correspondence and papers, literary manuscripts and journals of Sylvester Douglas, Baron Glenbervie (1744-1823) and of earlier members of the Douglas family, mainly his great-grandfather, Robert Douglas (1625-1716), Bishop of Brechin, 1682-1684, and the last Bishop of Dunblane (1684-1689) in the pre-Revolution episcopal establishment of the Church of Scotland; and his father, John Douglas of Fechil in the parish of Ellon, Aberdeenshire (1714-1762).

Inside the notebook on the board is written ‘Mich[s] Term. 12 Geo. II. 1738. C.B.’

The contents are as follows: (i) Letters, 1810-1817, of, to, and concerning, General Sir George Murray, including two letters from Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington; with a notebook in Sir George's hand, chiefly concerning the Peninsular War (folio 1); (ii) Correspondence and legal papers, 1824-1825, concerning Erskine v Murray (folio 29); (iii) Letter, 1845, of Sir George Murray probably to General Paul Anderson (folio 70).

Each volume has a contents list. Inglis was Lord Advocate in 1852 and 1858, Lord Justice Clerk from 1858 to 1867, and Lord Justice General and Lord President of the Court of Session from 1867 to 1891.

Includes papers of related families including Stirling of Ardoch and Strowan, a family bible and printed material.
